Employment

Sept 2008-Present Daily Mail (Freelance)
Online Sportsdesk/Newsdesk
  • Working for the online sportsdesk/newsdesk at the Daily Mail in London, I am responsible for writing breaking news directly onto the live site, as well as following up the newswires that we receive. I have also being tasked with web ordering in terms of what stories should go where in the relevant sections.
  • On an evening shift, whilst concentrating on ensuring breaking news and live sport is covered, I am also expected to upload sports and news stories that are due to appear in print, onto the website. In doing this it is important that I source the right pictures and graphics for the stories, as well as correctly captioning these. Often there is a certain element of free-reign in doing this as many stories in print are not often accompanied with pictures, so it is my responsibility to attribute related ones to the online versions.
  • It is vital to ensure the online sportsdesk and newsdesk are in regular interaction with the sportsdesk, sports editor, the sports news editor, and news editor so that all areas are covered with regards to what is being produced on breaking news. I have always worked closely with the relevant personnel, and never been afraid to ask questions when necessary.

March 2008-Present The Welwyn Hatfield Times
Sports Reporter/Sub
  • In my role on the sportsdesk I am responsible for the writing of copy for at least 18 pages in three editions of weekly publication; the Welwyn Hatfield Times, Potters Bar Edition, and the East Herts Herald.
  • I attend a variety of sporting events including football matches, community initiatives, boxing shows and rugby games of which I report on for the paper.
  • I upload a number of stories onto our website using a Content Management System (Atex) , and have recorded video and audio which has been put on the website. The system I have recently been trained on is the first of its kind, integrating print products with online material and is expected to be rolled out not only nationwide, but also internationally. I am eager to develop my online skills still further.
  • Using the website to keep our readers informed and aware is key, and as such the sports team update the website on a daily basis, providing breaking sports news, reaction, and match and game reports.
  • I am a confident and hard-working individual who is always eager to progress and update my contacts book, whilst always being organised and diligent enough to chase follow-ups.
  • I am fully qualified as a sub-editor, receiving copy from reporters, subbing, proofing, and then designing the pages around pictures, graphics and copy.

August 2007 Leeds Weekly News (One week)
November 2007 Wharfedale & Airedale Observer (One week)

During my time working on a newspaper I developed skills of working to a deadline, newsgathering, sourcing and writing and interviewing techniques. I made the front page during my time working for Leeds weekly news, and the editor commended one of my stories, developed entirely by myself, whilst working on the Wharfedale and Airedale Observer. I thoroughly enjoyed my work experience and feel I adapted well to the working environment.
